*for extra credit, anyone know what score Elle Woods got on her LSAT to get into Harvard Law in Legally Blonde? Anyone??*
Anyway, one student was a young woman who REALLY wanted to become a lawyer, and REALLY wanted to get into a decent law school. She actually took the class twice. And not only did she take the class, she made other changes she believed would help her chances. She stopped smoking, started eating healthy, and exercising.
One session, during breaktime, she mentioned she'd started eating flax with her cereal, because she'd heard that flaxseed was good brainfood. Figured eating flax while taking a prep class would really make her shine on test day. She asked if I knew anything about it, which I did not. But, what the heck, I'd give it a try.
Shortly after that conversation, I got some flaxseed at the healthy store and tried some on my morning bowl of cereal. Magnum did too.
GAG CITY!!
It was SO gross! I couldn't finish my bowl of cereal. Magnum agreed. It didn't really taste like anything, it was just the texture. Even just thinking of that memory now has me grossed out! It was like eating cereal with little dried boogers mixed in! Seriously!
To top that off, not only had I ruined a bowl of cereal, I'd ruined the entire box. I thought it would be a time-saver to just mix a bunch of
I threw the whole box out. I should've burned it, that would have been cathartic.
Anyway, I reported my results to... let's call her "Trish"... at the next class session.
"Trish", I said, "I couldn't do it! It was like dried boogers in my cereal! How do you eat it?!"
"Boogers, what?", she replied.
I explained. Even the part about mixing it into the whole box, and throwing the whole box out.
"Don't get the seeds!", she explained. "Get the ground up stuff! It's like, powdery. Just sprinkle it on. It's not boogery at all!"
Oh.
Trish is now a practicing attorney. We're buds on Linkedin where she seems happy and smart.
And I know to use ground flax.
Never whole flaxseed. Never ever. That would be stupid.

OMYGOSH...hahhahah! I knew where this was going because I used flax seed for my chronic pain (also really good for inflammation due to osteoarthritis or any sort of -itis that you have going on) and I told a family member to mix it in shakes or yogurt or whatever. They came at me the next day they tried it and said it got stuck in their teeth and throat and it was the absolute worst! Then I said "Oh. I should have said, ground flax seed!"
ReplyDeleteYou don't taste it at all. My bad!
Oh GAG! Now I'm thinking about it in a shake!
DeleteI am SO glad I read this before trying flaxseed. But I doubt I'll ever try flaxseed - whole or ground. Well, especially not whole. I don't know, does it work? Maybe I should try it. Some days my brain isn't firin' on all cylinders.
ReplyDeleteI loved Legally Blonde, but I have no idea what she scored on her test. :/
I don't know if it works. I eat it most days, but not all. Maybe I should track it with some sort of stupidity meter? But seriously, I have no idea while whole flaxseeds are even on the store shelves!
DeleteElle scored a 179 (max score of 180), such a badass.
LOL. Sometimes you don't know till you try and it was the wrong thing. Ground flaxseed is good in baked goods, like muffins, too---but just a tablespoon is enough.
ReplyDeleteI've not used it for baking, maybe I'll try it on the next rare baking occasion. And yes, a little goes a long way.
DeleteI love flax seed. More than most things. Also the meal, but I put the seeds in a lot of my foods.
ReplyDeleteGASP! An enigma! I don't know what it was, I typically like other such seeds. Flaxseeds, if I recall, had a bit of a slimy coating. I couldn't deal with that whole ensemble.
DeleteI guess I don't find them slimy? *shrug* they're really good baked into muffins or added to granola bars and whatnot. Now, chia does get slimy when it's hydrated. But I also like chia quite a bit.
DeleteI've eaten snot, who hasn't, but I'll pass on the flax seed. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that imagery...
DeleteI don't think I've tried that, but I'll have to remember about it. I just got chia seeds for the first time and have so far sprinkled them on my oatmeal. Fine. I heard if you plump them up first by letting them soak in liquid, they get gelatinous. I just tried it, and it's true, but why was I thinking gelatinous would be a good thing?
ReplyDeleteYah... "gelatinous" and "appetizing" aren't necessarily synonyms. I've never eaten chia seeds. Don't they grow into pets at Christmas time?
