Tornado

Well, this week just seemingly flew by.  How is it already Saturday?

And it's starting to feel like real summer now:  hot and buggy.  This week's prompt at Illustration Friday is "Tornado", and I'm thinking about summer storms.

When a lot of people think of Colorado, they think about the Rocky Mountains.  But really, that's only half the story.  The western half.  The eastern half of the state might as well be Kansas Junior.  It's flat and tornado-y out there.

I was trying to think of what to draw for "Tornado" other than a tornado.  Then I thought of Kansas.  Then I thought of "The Wizard of Oz".  Then I realized that the Tin Man wears a funnel on his head... like in funnel cloud!  Eureka!

Okay, maybe it's not that exciting of a revelation.

Anyway, it gave me a fun subject to play with this morning.  Chaco is moving to a new apartment today and I'm wanting to look busy so I don't get roped into lifting heavy things.  He found a place that's nicer than his college apartment and closer to where he works.

Wolfgang and a roommate found a new place too, but won't move in for a while due to roommate's current lease.  I warned Meego that Wolfgang will probably be moving back home temporarily.  I looked around Meego's room - which was formerly also Wolfgang's room - and contemplated where Wolfgang will sleep.

It took Meego about a half second to say, "couch".

See, Meego has successfully made that room his own, filling it with guitars, and most recently, a keyboard he bought with birthday money.  It looks like a band room in there.  And there's no longer room for another bed.

OH well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.  In the meantime, I'll just try to look busy and let things fall where they may, like waiting out a storm.

Love following your train of thought -- tornado to funnel head :) I never noticed the Tin Man has a bow tie. Good for Meego to stand his ground! I'm glad you had a good time at your convention.

But Oz never did give nothin' to the tin man ... Sorry. Your illustration makes me hear Neil Young singing...

Seriously, though. Great drawing. And I love the way your thoughts meander down a creative trail to come up with a unique representation for the illustration topic.

I'm not surprised how easily Meego took over the room once Chaco and Wolfgang were off to college. I'm curious as to how Wolfgang will react when he comes home and realizes that his portion of the room wasn't kept waiting for him. My oldest hadn't lived at home for a couple of years and still wanted "his" room kept just for those times he came home to visit. He protested when his bigger room was transferred to one of the other kids and he was relegated to the new, smaller guest room.

My thoughts of moving to a smaller house to keep the kids from moving back home has backfired. We all just cram into the small house now. Amp claimed the bedroom which relegated Chip to the basement. Meego, like Mario, is likely loving the extra space in his bedroom (or bathroom in Mario's case). Anyway...
I love your tin man, and your round-about way of deciding on him as your tornado inspired drawing. Nicely done!
P.S. Check your Abby email. :)

I'd never noticed the bow tie either. But I did remember the funnel hat!

Sing it, Tee!
I remember a friend of mine who went to visit Mom and Dad after moving out a few months prior. His room was totally transformed - knocked out a wall and everything - into a rec room. They didn't waste any time! At least your oldest has a guest room :)

I guess "home" is where Mom and Dad are, no matter the size of the house? It's funny how easily a kid can take over the largest bedroom in the house. I admit that I've enjoyed all his stuff being in his room rather than overflowing everywhere else.
Wolfgang got his bed and clothes to fit, but not without avoiding the overflow. I think I'll survive the temporary piles.

I always love when you share your drawings. I love them!

I also did not realize that part of Colorado was that flat but I should have known considering it boarders Kansas.

I often wonder about people who do a first road trip to Colorado and enter from the east, crossing the Kansas/Colorado border and being all "wtf??"

I love the drawing too.

It looks like both my daughters will be living away from home in September. Not totally. My younger one will be home at the weekends, and both of them will be here during the holidays, which seem to be most of the time. I have mixed feelings. I'd just got used to things as they were. It seems we'll have intense times of them being around all the time and lonely times when I won't see them for ages.

You've summed up pretty well how it seems to go with kids transitioning to living independently. When they're home, there's more "togetherness" than when they lived there full-time. Then there are the lonely times.

Oil! Oil! - the Tin Man. :-)

I hope that Chaco enjoys his new digs.

Chaco's place is a nice step up. We had some guy offer to buy our house outright last week. We're threatening to sell it and move in with Chaco.
