We managed to gather the whole gang, this final week of summer break, for a quick and dirty camping trip. Or should I say, quick and sandy...
Yep, headed down to the Great Sand Dunes for some wilderness adventure.
We had beautiful weather and a comfy campsite. No signs or sounds of bears or other unwanted intruders. The dunes were their usual amazing selves.
It's quite an interesting spot. If you're ever in the neighborhood, swing on by. A few hardy creatures live there, and it's difficult to imagine how they survive. Like these flowers...
We started out very dark and early this morning, and came upon three different campsites during our trek.
Although the night sky would be spectacular, I wouldn't want to camp out there - so exposed! Not even the tiniest of bushes for when you'd need to... talk to the bushes!
When we made it to High Dune, we found that someone had placed a staff there, mistakenly designating it as "Star Dune" which is quite a ways further.
We figure the staff-placers were (1) lost, (2) pranksters, or (3) both.
Either way, much fun was had, and another summer break is in the books!

Wow that sand looks amazing, and the colour of the sky. Glad you had fun!
That's a lotta sand without any ocean. Stark and desolate, but it has some amazing sights and colors. I dimly recall trekking across the dunes in my younger days back when I was a pup. We spend several family vacations camping out in CO as a means to escape the Texas summer heat. I would bet that sand got into everything.
It really is a sort of otherworldly place. Very fun!
The sand does get everywhere! On our way out, we swung by the visitor center, with the typical hands-on displays. Wolfgang says, "Oh look! Sand!" *sarcasm*
Wow, you got some amazing photos! Looks like a fun place to explore.
Can I come live with you? Seriously. I'm already almost packed....
Ah! I love the Dunes. I've never been in the summer. I'm allergic to summer heat. But It looks like you stayed away from that a bit by going out early. We usually go in November. One of my favorite trips for sure.
It's difficult to take a bad picture there, but I got a few...
Absolutely! (bringing cupcakes?)
We headed out around 5am, and made it back to home base a little after 9am when others were just getting started. Too hot by then for us! November sounds like a great time to go.
That looks gorgeous, but I'm amazed anything can grow there.
Can I just bake 'em in your oven? Mine's still broke.
