only half of us for the half on the fourth

A word to the wise:  If you want to do a half marathon, don't invite me to come with.

Recall that I did a half marathon last winter - the Super Half on Superbowl Sunday.  I did so at the encouragement of one of my P.E.O. sisters who was all set to do it.

She ended up getting snowed in.  Never made it to the start

This morning, I ran the Half on the Fourth.  This after the enticement from Wolfgang.  He never made it to the start.

Long story short, a few weeks ago, Wolfgang got the bug to do the Pikes Peak Ascent, which is a half marathon up the mountain (no way).  He found out that all the "regular citizen" slots were taken, but there were still some "fast people" slots open.  To get a "fast people" slot, he would need to do a qualifying half marathon in under 1:40.  So he went on the hunt and found the Half on the Fourth and planned to do it.

Okay, I guess that was pretty much just the long story.

Anyway, he got me thinking about doing it too, and I made the decision last week to give it a go.  Then he became Road Rash Man.

The road rash is improving nicely, but he didn't run all week and was only back on his bike on Wednesday.  It was decided that he best not try for a "fast people" slot today.

So there I was, headed to the race all by my lonesome.  One nice twist, however, is that my P.E.O sis from Super Half scratch fame made this one.

It was a nice run, now I'm beat.  I wasn't looking to be in the winner's circle, just wanting to finish the thing, which I managed.

So, the stats:

Time:  1:48:43
14th out of 280 females
56th out of 466 humans
1st for women 40 and older

And I got this medal.  Magnum says, "Wow a medal and everything!", but everyone who crossed the finish line got one.

And a shout out to the refreshments.  I think I ate the best orange EVER after the run.

So, nice way to start the holiday.  Happy Independence Day to all my US friends!  Time to get drunk and blow stuff up?

Congrats on taking first place for the over 40 crowd. sounds like a great run and nice way to kick off the 4th. Of course, I have to admit that I am slightly jealous on your jackrabbit pace (I am still dreaming of breaking 2:00). At 1:48, you almost qualified for the fast people slot. Run up Pikes Peak? Would be a walk in the park for you.

You are SO BUFF. And so ripped. What the heck are you doing being friends with an old fat woman? Even in my best weight lifting days, I never was that cut.

Well, I mainly wanted to beat the heat, so I was trying to finish before 9 a.m. I don't put up with the temps you do! "Walk" would be the only mode I'd want to do the Ascent in. Whew!

It's all prep for the apocalypse.

I figure that some extra weight will help me during the apocalypse. At least that's the theory I'm going to use to justify eating dessert. You're an inspiration :)

I'm wanting to run a half in September. I will not be inviting you. Who knows what would happen to me if I did....
But way to rock your half on the fourth! Did you run in your new shooz?

Way to go! Nice bling you earned for that run!

Sorry to hear that Wolfgang missed it. Hope he's fully healed up again soon.

I can support the eat-drink-and-be-merry strategy too!

No calamities in September!
My new shooz are racing flats, and I didn't think they'd have enough support for my old ladyness for this distance. Plus, I have no half-marathon racing strategy whatsoever, and just treat them as long group runs where my only "strategy" is to remain upright for the duration. I wore my trusty Pure Flows :)

Yeah, just bad timing for Wolfgang. He went for a run this morning, first one since his crash. The hip is pretty good, but the arm wound was pretty deep, and it would've hampered him for a half-marathon. He was even more bummed when I told him I saw two of his high school coaches among the volunteer ranks. BUT, there's always more races!

Well done! I have to say you look a little sunburnt in the photo! And I agree with Lottajoy you do look very buff. Great arms!

Hmmm... I am a little pink in the photo. No sunburn though, just the flush of exhaustion!

Seriously. I LOVE the Pure Flows. Great for longer runs!
I thought I remembered your new shooz are racing flats, so I didn't think they'd work for 13.1 miles, no matter what "ladyness" you are.
Here's to good health in September!

You GO, Girl! I did a sub-2hr half "back in the day"..... and it remains the only one I ever did. First for women 40 & older is great, especially since you're, (ahem) y'know, pretty deep into your 40's.

I was a bit surprised by that statistic - didn't think my time was that fantabular - and then there's my "depth" (ahem). It was a bit hot out, though, so maybe that slowed the menopausal field a bit...

Wow, great job!!

Wow--awesome job! You're amazing. Running UP Pikes Peak? My goodness--I went down it on a bike one time, and it was all I could manage. We had to go slightly upwards for some little stretches, and I was huffing and puffing. Yes, getting acclimated would have helped, I'm sure, but I'm afraid it still would have been tough for me. It was beautiful, though.

The Ascent is the SHORT race. The next day is the Pikes Peak Marathon which is up and back down in one hit. Some "people" do both races, but I don't think they're really of this world. Riding a bike down sounds fun, though!

Crazy "people," lol, but what an achievement! The bike ride was so much fun. A van drove us and all the equipment up to the top, and then they guided us down. My boys loved it, too.
