Natural

Chaco and I went to pick up his suit yesterday.  We walked into the place and it was crawling with teenaged man boys.  Then I remembered that one of my tutees told me this weekend was prom at her school.  That would explain all those children at the man store.

So we had to wait a while for a free employee, all of whom seemed a bit fed up with dealing with the prom boys.  I'm sure it's a good time for their profits, but they'd probably rather be selling suits and separates.

When we were eventually attended to, the woman apologized for the fact that a fitting room probably wouldn't be free for another 20 minutes or so.  Chaco tried on the jacket, and we declared it all good since In Hilda We Trust.

As we were leaving, there were more teenaged boys out in the parking lot.  Chaco commented, "Geez, it's like they're tailgating", which they seemingly were.

Funny how prom was such a big deal in high school, but looking back, it's pretty insignificant.  All those boys in their t-shirts and shorts and sneakers, getting all polished up, like it's the natural thing to do.  So I did this sketch for Illustration Friday, where the prompt is "Natural".  I did it with natural charcoal then played with gimp a bit to add that shiny thing.  It's called "distant sun".  Huh?  Huh?  Do I have a grip on technology or WHAT?!

Anyway, through a strange alignment of the stars, I have a light homework load this weekend, so thought I'd let the little art girl out to play...

No one asked her to prom.

Gimp is a nice piece of software isn't it, but even that can't make a bad drawing look good! Love the shades.

I hate wearing a suit.

Love your illustration! My older son has his prom next weekend. There's a whole new level of hype now compared to when I was a kid. Boys have to come up with an elaborate and creative "promposal," even when they already have tickets and plans for who they are going with. I don't think that it's worth all the stress (and money!) when you look back on it. I'll be there taking pictures though before the big event :)

Wonderful artwork!

We're getting a glimpse into this prom thing with our "8th grade formal" this coming weekend. REALLY??? Who has time for a FORMAL when you're in 8th grade??? Or the money? We're going with a suit, not a tux, bought it outright, and he's wearing it for Easter today, and perhaps every Sunday to church until it doesn't fit anymore to get my money's worth out of it.

He added a red bow tie a la Dr. Who. :)

Gimp is nice... and free! If I had more time, I'd play around, but I still prefer traditional artwork.

Prom has seem to have gotten even more formal, although I don't recall my kids talking about "promposals"! And yeah, I saved plenty of pics too :)

8th grade formal!! Don't say that too loud, I don't want anyone around here getting ideas.

It used to be that the boy could just get a tux and show up. Now they have to put nearly as much effort into it as the girls do! I think they all have a lot of fun with it though. I know my kids have great memories of prom.

Love your drawing. Looks like James Franco.

I thought James Franco, too!

"Promposal" -- huh. What'll these crazy kids think of next?

We didn't have a prom my senior year. However...had I robbed the cradle I could have invited James Franco, who went to my high school and was two years behind me. Yes, it's true. Then again, the girls he is hitting on now weren't even born yet...

Great sketch!

Yes, they do have lots of fun, it's not everyday they get to be all prettied up like that!

Since it's been mentioned, I also see the J-Franc resemblence. But I just used a reference photo I got after a deviantart search on "prom boy".

NO Way! You went to school with Spiderman's best friend?! And yeah, I hear he's doing a bit of cradle robbing himself these days.

Nice drawing! Btw, my dancer painting has been added to my post, just for you!
We don't really have prom here. We have graduation with a sort of prom attached. All the girls wear ridiculous pouffie princess dresses and the boys wear tuxedos. We took our daughter shopping for her dress back in January, at her request. She wanted to get that part over with. Her dress is elegant and not pouffie, although it is made of taffeta.

Just can't escape the taffeta can they...
Heading over to check out the dancer painting!

Are the simple things in life getting complicated, or am I just getting old? :)

This is the first I'm hearing of gimp; besides than the other gimp - the strings of it that my daughter makes bracelets and stuff with.
