I went to the post office today. I actually had to stand in the line in order to deal with a real postal person. I can say that after the strange 12-minute dealings at the DMV recently, the post office has now restored my faith in the uncaring inefficiency of government. Whew.
Another stop was the health food store. I go there about every six weeks or so. This isn't a trendy store like Whole Fudds or Trader Josepe's. This is the store for the die hards, the serious. The little store where half of it is vitamins, supplements, and "colon care", and the other half is mostly strictly organic-don't-even-think-about-having-conventional-in-the-same-building produce. What little meat they sell is from happy, free range, yogic type animals. Plus, it's strictly BYOB - bring your own bag. Paper? Plastic? Neither.
So I go there about semi-quarterly. I like to buy my baking stuff there because they have a great variety of pre-packed bulk items. I know that "pre-packed bulk" is a bit of an oxymoron, but that's what makes it so great. Bulk foods without scooping around in some big old bin that's been exposed to who-knows-what?
The main thing I noticed was how crowded it was! I know they have a good flow of clientele through there, but the place was noticeably hopping today. I wondered if there was some special event, but none that I could see. I concluded that maybe it's New Year's resolutions still going strong? People gonna eat healthy!
One thing I thought I'd try is to not eat any "white" food - well, grains that is. I hear bleached flour is nutritionally weak, so I'm trying to eat the unbleached only. It's harder than I thought it would be! What can I say? The bleached stuff just tastes better. Plus, it's everywhere. Plus, my kids tease me.
But okay, I can do this. One day at a time.

Good news about the Government agencies! Glad to hear they are back to normal. :/
I wish we had a health foods store near us. If we EVER get to move, that will be one of the stipulations. Being near a free-range farm would be even better! And now you've got me looking up the benefits of unbleached flour. I've tried whole wheat before, as I don't mind whole wheat bread, but the family doesn't go for it.
All whole wheat probably wouldn't make a very good cupcake :).
I think it's like anything else, you just have to get used to it. It has made me notice all the wheaty things I eat. And I do like our little health store. They're around:

Don't worry. I'm not interested in making my cupcakes healthy. :) I've tried it with muffins and breads and they weren't a big hit. But you're right, you just need to get used to it.
Thanks for the link. Clicked on it right away. The nearest one is 2 hours 40 minutes from my house. :/ There's a Trader Josepe's only an hour and a half away..... and there's some whole foods stores about the same distance. I can find natural and organic foods at our supermarkets, but sometimes I wonder if I can trust the label.
Our local health food store closed a year ago. Boo hoo. I can't buy bulk medicinal herbs anywhere anymore. I used to make my own cold formula tea and stuff like that. Our groceries now carry a lot of what the health food stores carry, but it's just not the same. You can't ask for advice because the pimply 16 year old stock boy just doesn't know the correct dosage of magnesium or where the burdock root is. In my parents' town they have the most amazing food co-op which is all healthy and happy food. I feel good just going in there! Oh well, I have good organic sources here of beef, chicken and eggs, so I can't complain too much. Good luck with your no white food policy. I eat white rice and potatoes but just in really small quantities.
I agree, it's not the same to get health food stuff at the all-around grocery stores. And it is sort of "catching" to walk around the store with the health nuts!
It's tough to eat healthy. Expensive too.
From a strictly "access" point of view, eating unhealthily is cheap & easy. Drive through dollar menus are a staple for a lot of folks, and the Whole Fudds of the world are pricey....and a bit boutiquey....especially when feeding a family!
