spring fever

I'm waiting for my hair to dry so I can do a grocery run. Exciting, right?

Despite pulling a few extra testing shifts, I've had a lot of free time during this lull between fall and  spring semesters, and classes thankfully start next week. I really should have planned better and done some projects around the house. For instance, every wall could use a new coat of paint.

As I've mentioned, I've been reading more and have logged 5 books on the year. Technically, it's more like 4 books since I finished one on new year's day that I'd started in December, but let's not get obsessive.

I don't have particular genres or authors I adhere to, just go with whatever inspiration hits me. I check them out from the library, so if any is a dud, it's only wasted time. Here is what I've shelved so far

The Listeners
. My favorite book of the year so far. I'd never heard of it, it just showed up when I did a random search of whatever was available.

The Mad Wife. Oooooh, this one was... eerie? Twisty? Is either the right word? Historical fiction based on real things in the 1950s. Could use several trigger warnings.

My Last Innocent Year. It's about a (silly) college undergrad having an inappropriate relationship with a (perve) instructor.

Ghost Eaters. While riding the bus to work one day, the person across from me was reading this. Curious, I picked it up. It's about ghosts... or 'shrooms... or both?

The Make-Up Test. Formulaic rom-com about rival grad students. Not a typical genre for me. Truthfully, I picked it up because I liked the author's name.

In other winter break "accomplishments":

  • I came in 4th out of about a dozen in our extended family's fantasy football league. I changed my email since our league was set up a few years ago, and I never was able to log in this season. Therefore, I never did a darn thing to my auto-generated player roster. That's the secret to my success.
  • I have a doctor (nurse practitioner) now. I had been doctorless for about the last five months. The practice I was established with changed hands and was no longer in our insurance network, but I had a physical a couple of months before the switcheroo. When I tried to get into a different practice, I was told I couldn't because I "need 366 days since your last physical".

The 366-day rule has not been met, but I'm now close enough to where I could at least get on someone's schedule. So there's that, I'm a name in a database now.

And... my hair's dry enough. On to more excitement.

  2. You do read a lot. I am not sure they would be for me, I kind of like to know what I am reading before I read - lol.
Glad you found a doctor. That is terrible. My doctor retired December 31 and I had to get a new one too. Get on the books!
    Congrats on your football fantasy!

  3. Too much excitement!
I love the library. Nothing to lose if you don't like a book. I think I might see if our library has The Mad Wife.

    1. It's been a very long time since I purchased a novel, much gratitude to libraries. The Mad Wife - yes, that one lingers in my brain!

  4. I think I'm on my second book of the year which considering the last few years is a pretty good start! That book The Listeners sounds interesting. I will look for it at our library.

    1. I really liked The Listeners. Apparently it was made into a 4-part BBC miniseries, well-done according to other readers.

  5. Lotta NP's now these days.

I finished the audio book Wrinkle in Time and I'm almost done with the first Harry Potter. Not reading, reading. Audio as I dig into big house projects. Really fun. Wireless headset for the win.

Happy Reading to you. Sounds like it's gonna be a very good year of reading.
