Yesterday afternoon, on the way home from work, the city had a station set up, giving away free stuff. Yes, I consider myself a minimalist, but that won't stop me from checking out some free stuff.
They were giving away bike lights, reflector bands - like for your sleeve or pant leg - and reflective shoe laces. I partook of the bike lights (the freebie tail light turned out to be total crap, but the headlight's a winner) and the shoe laces. The occasion was "Brighten the Night", sponsored by the city. I guess it for now that we're back to standard time, heading toward winter solstice.
The utilities people were there too, and I got a 4-pack of LED light bulbs. Generous of them. I was on my bicycle and really needed to play some excellent tetris to get everything in my bag.
This week has felt weird. Early darkness coupled with the election - tutor students looking for ease of anxiety, and not just the math kind. So we worry about the things we can control. Math is friendly that way. No ambiguity.
Speaking of controlling and brightness, I upped my visibility as I mentioned recently, regarding the early morning runs in the dark.
Snapped a couple of pics out in the pre-sunrise wilds this morning before the snow moves in.
My new vest not only is reflective, but has built in lights - front and back. Three light modes: fast blink. slow blink, and steady. I swear the fast blink has seizure inducing quality. I stay away from that.
Stay seen and sane, everyone 👍

dear lord, my first thought was TARGET!!! these are the times we live in in the USA
Your glasses were so fogged or is it just the picture? That vest is awesome. We wore them when we walked our dog since I am allergic to running or hiking. :-). This is a nice one! sorry about above
Peggy, yep, I like it. Very functional and lightweight. I think my glasses are reflecting the flash from my camera, hence the alien look 👽
Linda Sue, I sometimes wonder if it's better to be in stealth mode!
Oh now I feel underdressed in my reflective vest that has no lights!
I want lights too!
But I’m biking on bright city streets with car lights—-I noticed the other night how very visible another biker’s vest was.
How very?
Very.
Mathy things are comforting!
The guy in my printing class said that he likes to make linoleum Prince of birds – – they have such interesting feathers – – and, he said, “they don’t care about what we’re doing”.
Of course it affects them, but they don’t pay attention to elections.
Fresca, that particular path I was on is bring-your-own-light. And I felt similar to your printing friend about those ducks in the pond behind me. Just a start of another day
Thank you for being a good example and making yourself so visible. Our streets in Stratmoor Hills are unlit and I fear driving when it's dark out because some people have no sense at all.
You'll certainly be visible! I think you've mentioned before about these freebie bike bits things and I thought it was a great idea. Maybe they do it every year and it was a year ago you mentioned it, in which case, doesn't time fly?
Herb, I think many feel it's about them being able to see where they're going. But really it's about being visible to others!
Liz, it is a relatively bicycle friendly place! I think you're referring to Bike to Work day, Winter Bike to Work day, and now Brighten the Night.
We tend to ride on a trail and don't often have to be in the same lanes as cars but my helmet has a blinky light just in case. I don't know how folks ride on roads all the time; it scares me.
It is very bicycle-friendly. That's great. Says she who can't ride a bike
