... and then there was one

It's been many years since we welcomed you and your gang friends into our home.

Almost instantaneously, the three of you began to methodically and thoroughly kill everything that was alive, so I didn't dare bring anything else within your reach.

I kicked the meanest of you out, so you and your partner lived a minimal life since then - no new friends nor new vegetation to murder.

As the years ticked by, I wondered at your longevity and ability to thrive despite the depravity.

Ultimately, however, it was I who controlled your fate, as I think you know.

But I couldn't do it, I could not willingly put you to death, so I continued to sustain you both, feeding the monsters within.

But now, he's gone and only you remain.

Why do I feel sorry for you?

The Death of Monster2

Aw - poor fish, all by his lonesome.
That'll teach him not to beat up all his nice things!

You had me wondering right up to the photo! Nicely done!

Poor little lonely fish. Still he has multi coloured gravel, what more could he ask for?

I wonder if it was really "natural causes"? Only the diver knows for sure. That's a very clean fish tank, by the way.

I relate to this post so much! This captures my love/hate relationship with the fish my children have brought into my life (and left in MY life) to a T!
Also.....sorry for your loss!

Now that you are down to one, is it time to begin interviewing another gang?

I might feel sorry for him too, but he made his bed....
(Nice job telling the story in 8 lines. I should probably try an 8-liner to kickstart my neglected blog. Sigh.)

He's actually pretty lucky I didn't flush him after one week.

Right? Who needs companionship?

The diver knows and he's not talking.

I usually enjoy keeping fish, but these were mean mean.

We had a nice community tank before these two came in and wiped out the community within a coupla weeks. I'm not sure how safe it is, even with just one old and lonely monster fish!

You're right.
And yes, I bet you could do 8 lines for us! You know you want to try!

He's got the little diver buddy to keep him company. I had 2 39cent goldfish for about 8 years when I was a kid. No one could believe how long they lived. You weaved that story quite well with 8 lines.

Maybe screen the mean fish on one side of the tank and bring in nice fish for the other side? Or, trade for nice fish at the fish store? I hope your leg is better.

He does have the little diver buddy. I never expected these two would live so long! We'll see how long this guy lasts.

Fish are funny creatures. I took out "the" mean one, and within minutes, another one was "promoted". Interesting from a scientific viewpoint, annoying from a hobbyist one.
And yes, the leg's better, thanks!

Great post - and I was fascinated by your pic of the little GI Joe-looking diver chained to the rock... I first thought he was the mean one!

What is it about even the most mindless little creatures that I have a hard time seeing dead in their habitats? We have one fish left and I hold my breath every time I round the corner to his tank. Looks like it's almost time to empty your tank and fill it with baby mice!

The diver is my favorite. He holds all the secrets!
