I'm curious about something. One day this week, I went to the high school to drop off some band stuff for Meego. My impeccable timing put me there right during a passing period, plus it was homecoming week, so it was teen heaven while I was there.
I'm pretty comfortable around teenagers, having lived with some, who sometimes bring friends over. Plus, most of my tutees are high schoolers. And there I was in the teen mass of humanity that is the high school.
One trend I've noticed in the last couple of years - first at the university, and I saw it again at the high school - is that of the "furries". Seen 'em?
Yes, people wearing animal tails, not necessarily as a costume, but more a fashion accessory.
I don't really know anything about this trend. Some suggest that "furries" identify as animals, but I dunno.
I did find it a bit strange to see college kids wearing them to class. They often wear ears too. Even on hot days.
I'm inclined to think, "Well, they're not hurting anyone. What's a little fur?"
And I know there are a whole mess of them over at deviantart.

Well I have a 16 and 21 year old and I've never seen either of them wear furry tails... yet. They have worn furry ears very occasionally, so maybe the tails will come soon. Thanks for the warning. ;D
Oh, yea, I've heard about Furries. In my mind, it is kind of an offshoot of Cosplay. Certainly an interesting hobby. I am surprised you didn't spot any at one of the comicons. I believe that some cities even have conventions for Furries. I guess it beats out the My Little Pony conventions.
The ears? Okay. The tails? Not okay--there's something just too sexual about that.
Good luck!
Oh, we've spotted several at comiccon, but what ISN'T at comicon?? They're a bit more noticeable entering a calculus class. Yes, I've heard of specific furry conventions. It feels weird just to type that.
Maybe that's the point?
The only "furrie" I have heard of is the ... well, you know. Ugh. I hope this isn't code for that.
I wouldn't put it past them.
Seriously? This is a thing? I'm spending too much time at the hotel.....
It's really a thing. Coming soon, to a hotel near you (betcha)!
Furries? I haven't seen nor heard of them. Maybe the trend is making its way over from your end of the country. I agree, though. It seems a pretty harmless, non-threatening kind of fashion trend.
Unlike Goths and Emos, I feel a bit protective of the furries. Like they need a cuddle or something.
