Magnum, Meego, and I just got back from a techno-free wilderness weekend at Lake Isabel, one of our favorite techno-free locations.
It was nice to get away and commune with nature. The weather was very welcoming, and we got in a fair amount of hiking, fishing, splashing, chopping, fetching, etc.
Chaco and Wolfgang both worked on Saturday, so they didn't join us. While we missed having them around, it was nice knowing that someone was back holding down the house and giving the pets their needed affection.
And in the meantime, we had some camp visitors from the animal kingdom so we wouldn't feel left out.
I awoke last night to see Magnum sitting up, unzipping the tent window and peering out.
"I heard a bear or something scratching on the bear boxes", he whispered.
"I didn't hear anything", I whispered, so as to cancel out his hearing a bear.
"It was a few minutes ago", he shushed.
A little while later, I heard what sounded to me like something scratching on a bear box farther away than our bear box. Ah well...
The only furry critter we saw in our camp this morning was this one
He/she is going to be a nice big butterfly (moth?) soon, I think.
So a good way to wrap up an otherwise nice week - communing with nature and carrying stuff, and stuff!

Your weekend trip sounds very fun, if not altogether relaxing. (We're you able to go back to sleep after hearing the scratching? I wouldn't have!)
We love camping but I am not sure about this bear stuff...
That is a strange looking caterpillar - don't think I would touch it, they often have a nasty effect on skin!
I did manage to eventually go back to sleep after several repetitions of "go away... go away... go away... go away..." in my head!
The bears just want food, so if it's stored properly, your camp and car shouldn't get trashed. They rarely bother people in tents unless the people smell good, which I'm pretty certain we did not!
Glad we didn't touch the caterpillar - not that I wanted to!
Camping is the best but I could do without the bears near by. That is scary. Love the cute deer.
Well, I suppose it wouldn't be an adventure without the scary parts :)
Camping with bears must mean that you got far enough away from your usual world for it to count as summer vacation. Makes me want to go camping too!
Good Lord. How far did you have to carry that stuff?
Awesome weekend! Camping is great!
Yes, I'd say it counted!
Oh sheesh, the ends of the earth, it seemed...
Yup!
I love that you make the time for all these adventures. We used to do more of that when the kids were little, but now, we just let time pass us by and only TALK about doing that stuff.
I'da been a little freaked out by the bear, but I'm with you - what's an adventure if there's not some fear involved!
If I saw something labeled "Bear Box" at a campsite, I would NOT open it -- a bear might be in there! It's where they keep them, right? Y'know, like a shoe box or matchbox or JackintheBox.... Maybe Mag heard one trying to escape!
As the kids get older, it's harder to plan these things, and we do a fair amount of talking too!
Uhm... yeah, that was prolly what he heard.
But actually, there were written instructions on the INSIDE of the box on how to open the box. Good thing bears can't read, nuh?
