home for the holidays

Some of the old long-time readers of this blog may recall past Christmases around here when we used to go on our yurt adventures over the winter break.  We'd go a-yurtin' for a couple of days up in the mountains.

It was always a good time, but one of the drawbacks was that we had to reserve the yurt plenty in advance, and the weather and roads getting to and from yurt country often presented mild peril.  As I recall, one of the roads along the journey is called "OH MY GOD! Road".

So we stopped going.

BUT, this year, we've got the next best thing!  We've decided to field test our Zombie Apocalypse tent.  (Thanks to setup team of Magnum and Meego)

.

This is to be our accomodations for Christmas Eve.  I've decreed no prezzents for anyone who doesn't make it the full night.

... which means I'll probably have a lump of coal, if anything, to show this year.

  1. In my (admittedly limited) experience with zombie apocalypses, tents rarely offer sufficient protection. But good luck!

  2. Boy, you sure make your family earn those presents! I can imagine the stories Meego will be telling in 30yrs....."When I was your age, we didn't get Christmas unless we spent Christmas Eve outside! In the winter! In Colorado! In a tent!" He'll appear hardened, but secretly, he'll soften over the fond memories.

So, what time's reveille? "I love the smell of canvas in the morning"....(FutureMeego)

    1. It's all part of my mission of preparing today's youth for a resilient future - all the more reason for me to get dibs on the spot closest to the stove!

The hour of reveille remains to be seen. Weather forecast predicts a low of 12 tonight. WHAAAAT!!?!?

  3. Wow--I thought I made my kids do some crazy things. Only kidding, it sounds like a really special night is ahead for you all. Cool video--no zombies would go near a tent like that, guaranteed.

    1. I think you've solved the mystery of what THAT was about! They deny, but we've got video!

  5. That looks like so much fun. I would be there in a heartbeat. And bring my own sleeping bag. Wow, a stove inside the tent. I am so impressed. The video was fun to watch. Magnum and Meego look like they know what they are doing in the video. Good job, guys! Have fun.

  6. I love that the little ad I saw while watching the video was for a luxury hotel. Maybe to some it is. :)
I think it's a great idea to try adventurous things over the holidays. It makes them much more memorable. Our adventures aren't quite as adventurous as yours, but they're fun just the same. Guano's right, Meego will look back on yurtin' with fond memories.
When your fingers thaw out, let us know how it went!

  9. I can do that... I can. Really. Just need a few lessons and I'm good to go.

    Wishful thinking.

The video was fun to watch.

  12. Reminds me of a few winters I spend in Germany living out of a canvas tent with a sleeping bag and space heater.
