It's still bitterly cold here. I'm ready to be done with winter already.
But NO, none of that talk. We are outdoor people! So today, we ventured out to The Great Outdoors (of retail). A new Bass Pro Shop had a grand opening earlier this week. People camped out for it. Traffic was backed up along the interstate for it. Once the doors opened, it was a veritable mosh pit.
So we decided to go check it out today. Big store.

Duck pond outside, shooting gallery and bowling alley inside, even Santa was there. His beard was probably real. Only real beards at Bass Pro Shop!

Ha ha, I think so too, especially the one sitting on the top of your head!
I'd rather hit a Bass Pro Shop instead of a mall any day.
Didja check out their snack bar? You can get an ostrich or buffalo sandwich! Try getting something like that in the mall food court....
Campers camping for camping stuff, eh? I wonder how that crowd compares to, say, new iPad campers.....
Bass Pro's are always fun to walk through. The closest one to us is an hour or more away, so we don't hit 'em too often.
It's a little early to be "done" with winter, but I'm feeling the same way. It's been windy and cold and I want it to be warm already! I'm trying not to dwell.
I see Meego's still in shorts though....
Oh, my boys would be SO jealous! We don't have a Bass Pro Shop in the near vicinity. We have a Gander Mountain, which is sort of a mini-Bass Pro Shop. And there's a Cabela's (on par with your Bass Pro Shop) in the making, just about 2 miles from home. The boys are nearly crawling out of their skin with excitement. Every time we drive past, Mark comments on the progress. I am mildly entertained by these stores, but won't be a regular customer.
I notice that Meego is wearing shorts in spite of the fact that you stated it's bitterly cold. He could pass for a Minnesotan!
Bass Pro knows the best time to open a new store. I can't imagine camping out for a grand opening though. Just sayin'. You could spend a whole day in a Bass Pro Shop and still miss seeing something though.
You sure this is a store? Looks like a natural history museum, but then there wouldn't be that many people in a museum. Happy belated birthday!!
We have a Bass Pro shop here west of town. Same kind of grand opening mayhem. Ours even has real has a real Alaskan Snow plane complete with show skis to give it that real wilderness touch. Funny to see that kind of wilderness settings in deep south Texas. I agree with Terri that Cabela's is on par with Bass Pro. A real guy kind of store. Interesting stores with lots of neat things but I typically hit them only during the holiday season for gifts for the nephews and brothers (think hunting theme). Nothing says Merry Christmas like some camouflage gear from BPS or Cabela's.
That store looks really cool. I don't think I have anything like that near me in Connecticut. (It's super cold here too, though--ugh!)
Yeah, it's kind of sad thinking about the bunnies. But judging just from my neighborhood, they're pretty good at making more!
NO, we missed the snack bar! We'll have to hit it next time. I doubt there's a veggie burger. I think the camping campers look forward to these things.
Some of the bitterness is letting up... for now. Meego has given up on long pants. Weirdo.
A big Cabela's recently opened about 40 miles from us. Magnum's been wanting to go and we'll probably make it there eventually, but it's not too high on my priority list. The new BPS, though, is practically in our backyard. I thought of your men while visiting.
I was recently sorting some photos from Meego's elementary school days. I almost didn't recognize him in the ones where he was wearing long pants. Who's his mother?!
A camp-out woman was interviewed on the news. She said they taught their kids to ride bicycles while living in the parking lot.
HA! That's a funny - and probably accurate - observation about stores vs. museums!
Yep, it's hard to imagine needing snow landing gear in Texas. It is kind of fun to visit, but you're right about the guy appeal. I think the buxom mermaid image advertising the Fish Bowl bowling alley wasn't necessarily included for the lady shoppers.
There was definitely lots to see and spend money on. I wasn't interested in buying anything, I just went to look at the fish!
Live fish below dead mammals - so odd!
The first time I went into our local Bass Pro, I was amazed. I'd been in those type stores on a smaller scale, but this was the cream of the crop! It's only 8 minutes away from my house. I should go more often.
Are Magnum and your kids your personal photographers? Do they know when you're getting shots for the blog? :)
I know, right?
We visited the BIG Cabela's when we were in Nebraska, so this BPS wasn't as impressive if we hadn't seen the big Cabela's. But still.
I think the fam has gotten used to "one for the blog!" now and then, other times I have to be more discrete. :)
