moustache

We had mid-term exams this week.  Gosh, I haven't taken a mid-term since... who knows?!  Oh well, I think I held my own okay.  I'm starting to get used to this college kid thing.

As a result of mid-terms, I found myself without much homework.  What to do with my Saturday morning??  I ended up taking a stroll over to my previous Saturday morning stomping grounds - the right side of my brain - to do this watercolor pencil sketch.

This week's Illustration Friday prompt is "moustache".  Does anyone know the reason for the popularity of the black handlebar moustaches popping up everywhere?  I got a kick this week out of this photo from the local humane society's surgery team on my facebook page:

I think they were removing a dog's manliness at the time.  A little facial hair ode to testosterone?

May it rest in peace.

ACTUAL FACT: Way back, when folks rarely washed and lost their teeth early, mustaches helped plump up the upper lip (that always caved in with the loss of upper teeth) It also helped stifle the stench of bad oral hygiene.

Okay. That's not an actual fact. But didn't it SOUND authoritative?

That sure sounded authoritative to me, lotta joy. The big thing about mustaches came about because of Movember, when men grow facial hair in the month of November in effort to support those with men-type cancers - prostrate cancer being one of them.
Your illustration is great. Love the eyes.

I believe your first paragraph in a gross non-hygienic way.

I wondered if it had something to do with Movember and not face hair envy.

Love your watercolor! Very old-timey.

Lotta Joy's got a great imagination, if not a little twisted! I totally believed it!

So nice to see your right brain again! Looks like it didn't get too rusty while your left brain did all the work.
Love the watercolor mustache. Makes me wonder if I'm up for another Movember challenge.....

Mustaches (is that how you spell it?) are very in now, to wear, whatever your gender. My 15 year old wears them on her face and hoodies. Very weird, but fun.

I was with my 17 year old at a local college for a National Portfolio Day. The lines! The crowds! Kids selling their talent! I was thanking God that I didn't have to do this over again. YOU are special! Who knows though. Maybe I'll surprise myself and take a few courses in the future.

I like the illustration. Such intensity!
