how I spent my [last day of] summer

Meego left this morning for his first day of 8th grade.  No fanfare, just back to it.  Since he's our last member of the public school system, yesterday was dubbed our last day of summer.

The elementary kids went back yesterday, and I have no idea what went on at the crosswalk.  It was a little sad not being there to greet them on the first morning, but it wore off quickly.  By the afternoon, I was thrilled to not have to go out and fight the heat, the traffic, the urge to not be out there...

I had things to scratch off my endless to-do list, but decided we should try to make the most of our last day.  Meego just finished getting Reese the snake's new palacial estate move-in ready.  He and Magnum had to build a new lid for it that needed to be secure and sturdy enough to (a) keep the snake in, and (b) keep the cat out.

After a little snake enclosure feng shui, King Reese was ready to check out his new digs.

He seems very happy with room to stretch out now.

We headed out for some token back-to-school shopping - coupla pairs of shorts for Meego and a big duffle bag for Wolfgang.  Then, a trip to the pet store to get another hide for Reese, plan out our next zoological project (the transformation of Reese's old tank), and partake of more fish aquarium scheming.

In the afternoon, Wolfgang took off to hang out with friends and Meego and I decided to take a bike ride with YoYogurt as our destination.

This yogurt shop is in a primo location - located about halfway between the high school and the middle school.  We headed out just as the elementary kids were getting out.  When we arrived at the shop, it's like everybody and their grandma had the same idea!

Older kids there to celebrate their last day of summer, little kids there to celebrate their first day of school.  It's a wonder there was enough fro-yo to go around!

But we got ours and headed out away from the clamor.  The outdoor tables were all full, so we took a load off on a comfy bench outside the 12-minute DMV.

We enjoyed a nice ride back home just before it started sprinkling.

No fanfare.  Just a nice end to the summer.  Thank you, summer 2013.

It really seems like you made the most of your summer. And what a great way to spend your last day of it! Sooo jealous.
But please explain.... what do you mean by another hide for Reese? A new coat? A place for him to camp out? I'm not very snake savvy. :/

A good day of celebrating! I didn't know snakes appreciated feng shui! Reese must be very happy!

Our public schools don't start until after Labor Day, so as I've seen all kinds of facebook and blog posts about the first day of school, it just seems all too early. Happy school year to Meego!

It was "simply" a nice day.

Ha! I thought about that afterward - "hide" can have several meanings. Yeah, we got him a sheepskin coat. KIDDING. A hide is just another thing for him to hide underneath. He's got that cave and the hollowed out log thing. Meego got him what is essentially a rock with a big hole in it.

I remember when (in my old lady voice) school never started before Labor Day. I don't know what's gotten into kids these days!

That sounds like a great day! Reese is beautiful and I like the lid you built. I keep needing to change the screen on my beardies enclosure because the cats lay on it. I'm glad you had a good day!

I think your son should have taken the snake to school in his packpack. Hey, some kids take guns! This would make him totally COOL. Maybe next week.

I laugh at the expression "everyone and their grandmother," as mine has come up with some rather challenging ideas. Can he take the snake for show and tell, or has that part of class been canceled due to fear of lawsuits?

I'll admit I was a bit freaked out by your snake, but that feeling was soon taken over by the idea of fro-yo blended with fruit - my favourite! This summer has been a sweet one, and I am thankful for it, too. We still have two weeks before the start of school.

I'm beginning to feel slightly disoriented because of the school thing, which for us, is the Tuesday after Labor Day. Strange...I'm usually counting the days by mid-August, but not now. A sign of the kids growing up and maturing, I guess. Also, they are not driving me crzy to shop for school supplies. The oldest drives now and it was such a pleasure to see her and her sister drive off to Target today in search of backpacks...without me!

I can detect the sentimental tones in your post as you meandered about on your last day of summer. I'm glad it was a good one.

Sooo... What did you, China, Napolion, Reese, and the fish crew do today? I like Reese's new pad. :)

I'm trying to enjoy the last week and a half of the school summer holidays here in the UK, but the kids are so ready to go back. Or is it just that I'm so ready for them to go back? :D

Nice way to wrap up the summer. Getting Meego ready for school while taking care of King Reese.
