This week's Illustration Friday prompt is "Ocean", and I decided the world didn't need yet another drawing or painting of a lighthouse.
I think the oceans are marvelous places. Nature shows about oceans are so engrossing with their incredible diversity of creatures. Living landlocked my whole life, I've had four visits to oceans in total. Someday, I want to attend an all-night party with a big bonfire on a beach.
That's what I think about when I think about the ocean.
But when it comes to actually going IN the ocean, farther than wading, I think about flesh-loving sharks. Not a fan.

ReplyDeleteI've lived along the ocean while in Greece. We were more worried about stinging jelly fish than sharks.
And the last time I went snorkeling, I came across a huge barracuda. I turned around and swam right back to shore.
I like the sun-tanning and late night bonfire aspect of the ocean much better!
I prefer baracudas of the plymouth variety! I'm happy to look at that stuff at the aquarium.

DeleteI tend to think about the unpleasant stuff that floats in the sea near me. Beach parties are fun, they were quite regulsr when I was young.

ReplyDeleteThose mandibles are powerful -- but perhaps not as powerful as the media that hyped 'em up.
I can hear the increasing tempo of the Jaws pursuit music now....swim faster!
That movie probably scarred me for life. Even the ridiculous sequels couldn't erase the images!
DeleteInteresting to hear of someone who did not have time at an ocean. I grew up in southern California, was at the Pacific Ocean much of the time, took my own kids there a lot and at times lived at the ocean. I like your shark, but I hope you keep your dream of one day enjoying a fun time at the beach at a huge bonfire.

DeleteGreat shark! Interesting point of view from a landlocked state. I've been able to see/wade in several different oceans, but the Caribbean is probably my favorite - clear water, white sand. Some place you can see everything.

A menacing creature for sure! Great image - I like the monochromatic choice you made here - it makes the shark all the more sinister.
