six years

Here's a typical shot from our hike last weekend:

We were stopped for a bit of rest, so I whipped out the camera.  The above is the usual reaction when I whip out the camera.

"Okay, act natural!", I coached, and they each immediately struck a pose.

Doncha just love when your kids obey you?

Actually, I kinda like that our kids are reluctant photo subjects - neither hams nor selfie obsessed.  Throw in the fact that it was their mom with the camera - their mom who blogs - and it's next to impossible to get a traditional wish-you-were-here! pic.

As I pulled this photo out, I dug around the archives to see if I could find a similar one taken on the same date.  Lo and behold, I found this from exactly 6 years prior:

Look, they're smiling! (sorta), and standing in assigned spots (more or less).

What I like about this contrast is that I'm glad for both the things that have remained the same and the things that have changed.  We still enjoy the great outdoors as a family, and have the good health to do so.  But asserting some good natured individuality and non-compliance to convention is actually something Magnum and I have often encouraged.

Just be yourself... unless it will get you fired or arrrested or punched in the face or...

Linking up with Mama Kat this week:
4.) Share your top favorite photo you took in June. Give us the back story.

(And, okay, actually it probably wasn't my "top favorite photo" from June, but it was an easy grab...)

That's a hilarious contrast! Cute pics, both.

My kids do the same thing when I whip out the camera! I gotta be quick and not let on to what I'm doing.
How sweet to see the changes 6 whole years can make. But you're right, the important things have stayed the same.
And I like your "just be yourself..." mantra. Your kids have benefited well from it!

You little fellas look like they are enjoying their outdoor hike.

At least you don't have a collection of photos of hands - about 90% of photos of our daughter are hands blocking the shot...

I love comparing photos like this - a few weeks ago we dug through pics from last year to see how our kids had changed as a result of diets and working out at the gym. It was incredible.

Great comparison shots (then and now). That happens with some kids - as they age they become less willing to pose for the camera. You wind up having to ninja photo them just to get something decent. Otherwise, like Rock, you wind up with either hand shots or the back of their heads.

There was also that campfire pic, where I'd told them to all play with their weinies...

I'd probably worry if they easily complied to letting me take their pic. I'd be doing something wrong in the mom department!

I think so!

It is fun to look back isn't it? And yes, I do have a few hand photos.

Yes, I like that title: Ninja.

I think it's a boy thing. My guys shy away from the camera, but my girl seems to have perfected her camera face so that she always looks perfectly posed and happy when a photo is snapped. All of her girl friends seem to have the same skills.

"Act natural."
My favorite oxymoron.
