Silver Liningness Sunday

Full Moon.  Solar flares.  Friday the 13th.  Father's Day.  All in one weekend!

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads out there, including Magnum and my own dear old dad.  I actually haven't called my dad yet today, as he's not a fan of Hallmark Holidays.  But he seems to like it when I call, so I'll probably rebel.

As a special gift to Magnum, we took a weekend getaway.

Well, actually no.  We were going away for this weekend anyway because it was Denver Comic Con weekend!  Welcome to Nerdtopia!

It was a little iffy since Chaco was gimping around on his bad ankle.  Recall that he rolled it post-Incline a couple of weeks ago.  Just as the ankle was getting back to normal, Chaco and some coworkers were returning from lunch and dashing through a parking lot, dodging a rainstorm.  He planted his foot in some mulch and...  back to square one.

But, he'd had a few days to rest it, and he was willing and able to take one for Comic Con.  Once we entered the convention center and made plans for our rendezvous, Chaco and Wolfgang ditched the parents.  Meego was happy to keep us company however.

As expected, there was a good crowd.  Last year, I think the popularity of the event overwhelmed the staff, so this year, they seemed well-prepared for the masses.  Check-in and moving around went pretty smoothly all things considered.

The cosplay was impressive as always.  I noticed that there weren't as many zombies as previous years, so maybe that theme is waning.  Other genres were well represented - Dr. Who, X-Men, Star Wars, Serenity/Firefly, and various other comic book, video game, and anime characters I'm ignorant of.

Bender!  And his little sand person?

Lego Batman was very popular.
I was checking out his abs.

So a good time was had by all.  There were several geek celebrities there, but that wasn't my focus.  I enjoy the people-watching, the cosplay, and the Artist Alley.  There is some impressive artwork there, but I never buy any of it.  What would I do with a watercolor of Wolverine or Daryl Dixon?  Nevermind...

So a big thanks to the people of Denver Comic Con - workers and attendees alike.  Nice bunch for a geek weekend.

Same time next year?  Hopefully so, unless the veloci-rapture occurs...

Nice con! I missed the one they had in Houston over Memorial Day (bummer) but they had a few of the same genres (Dr Who). Really wanted to get a selfie with the Tardis or Dalek. Great way to enjoy the weekend in Nerdtopia.

I saw at least one Dalek walking around. That takes dedication.

Sounds like a great bit of family-Fathers Day-fun! I didn't recognize many of the character names you listed. I did however recognize Bender. Jake watches enough of whatever that show is with the one-eyed Peg Bundy character that I knew who he was! Yay me. Still, don't think I'll be heading to Comic Con anytime soon.

How cool that Comic Con coincided with Father's Day! A great way for the family to spend time together without being too Hallmark-y.
I'd enjoy it for the people watching alone. And how can you not feel happy in room full of nerds. :)

That's so cool! Our mini Con coincided with the Chocolate Festival this year, so it was indulgence in many forms. And it was pretty enjoyable listening to someone heckle the Armageddonists outside. For reals.

That be "Futurama"! I only know these shows because of my kids too. When I see the same cosplay character a lot, I can ask them who the heck it is.

They really are a harmless bunch, which makes for a fun atmosphere without worrying about any drunk drama. Not easily done with a crowd that size!

Funny thing, there was a Hari Krishna outside. At first, I thought he was dressed as the Last Airbender, but he was really just a Hari Krishna.

Good times! Our event always interferes with - something - usually a personal calendar issue. But, I hear incredibly cool things about it. One of these years...

"Cosplay". Hmm. So that's a word now. (I kinda thought I sorta knew what it meant, but had to Google it to refine my comprende.) Last year #2 offspring cosplayed (can I verb it?) that Spider Man villian with the metal tes, er, tentacles. He used dryer ducting as the arms; came out pretty cool -- made the yearbook! But I didn't know there was a word for it....

I was delayed a few days in Indianapolis for work some time ago. Could NOT find a hotel room anywhere; turns out a Comic Con was in town. I'm like "What's that?". Brandished my hotel points status (*ahem*) & eventually got a room. Shared a down elevator to the lobby with some folks seemingly from a waay different demographic/planet, each one a caricature in his/her own right, but not in costume -- unless t-shirt, sweats, Crocs & cheeze puff dust counts as cosplay for that one guy. Most were noticeably paler; I sensed an eager anticipation about them.

I'm normally Joe Average, blending into the woodwork. I was Sore Thumb on that elevator......

I think your boys (and you!) would have a good time. Get out your Wonder Woman gear and mark your calendar!

I think I learned "cosplay" from some artist geeks I (internetly) know. Some really get into it, creating elaborate costumes, then hitting the -con circuit. I usually need our kids to fill me in on who the various characters are as we see them walking by. "Who are all these chicks with big hammers??" (Harlequin). Dryer ducting for teNtacle arms would be perfect for... that villain guy!

The first year we attended, we were in a high-rise hotel, and I shared a high-speed elevator ride with Darth Mal who nearly lost his lunch. Who knew that was his weakness!?
