going back

It's back-to-school time.  Let's warm up with an anatomy fact:

"If you removed all the arteries, veins, and capillaries from a person's body, and tied them end-to-end...the person will die." ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson

Today's mission, should you choose to accept it - school supplies for Meego.

*GROAN*

I'm looking at this list I just printed off and am already picking out the items I will ignore in my silent revolt.  When I was a noob at this, I would just buy everything on the lists.  When I got sick of that, I started writing checks to EduKit.   Once both Chaco and Wolfgang were in high school, I got back into the hunt for Meego's stuff.

It doesn't look too bad.  I know I've got some of this stuff in my stash of misfit school supplies.  I refuse to buy the seemingly 3-year supply of pencils along with the handheld pencil sharpener.  An entire package of red pens?  I think not.

So it shouldn't be too bad.  Just out of curiosity, I went to the EduKit site to see what the going rate is for the middle school's 7th grade kit.  It's $61 plus a $21 Spanish kit for El Meego.  I'm pretty sure I can beat that.

Wolfgang has a summer job working for EduKit.  He's been full-timely sorting and stuffing school supply boxes.  Not a bad way for a teen to make a gob of money over summer.  Hmmm... employee discount?  Or maybe a few Meego middle school 7th grade kits just lying around?  Who would notice just one?

Okay, in lieu of advocating workplace theft, I guess we'll go out and brave the pillaging hordes.

Ah, the annual hunt for school supplies. I recall those days so long ago and do not envy you. Now college level supplies are a wee bit different (and more expensive). I like your approach to the challenge - working to satisfy the requirements and come in under budget. Spoken like a true engineer at heart.

The quote by Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the funniest I've ever read!

I thought you wrote "I'm a nob at this" . That means something pretty rude in the UK. What is it with you and your posts. :D

The kids have over a month off before they return to school here in the UK. I'm counting the days. :D

School supply shopping has been a cinch for me these past few years... I bring the kids with me, send them off with a cart and their list, and we meet at the checkout line.
We do the same as you, however. Before we go, they have to go through the misfit of school supplies and find items suitable for re-use, then we buy the rest.
The Edukits are a nice idea in theory. Perfect for those overly busy parents. I'm not sure any of the schools around here offer that.

I do NOT miss school supply shopping! It was worst in the years before my kids hit high school. Back then, we had to buy things to help supply the classroom - like copy paper and containers of Lysol wipes, paper towels and of course, the typical box of tissues. In high school the kids didn't even find out until they'd gone to their first day of class what supplies they had to buy - and then they were minimal.

Sounds like you see the EduKits as a challenge. Bet you'll make it your mission to spend as little as possible on school supplies!

It used to be a stressful event - especially if it was done at the last minute when all the marble composition books were gone. Over the years, it's tapered WAY down. We go through our school supply "box" in the pantry, size up how many red pens, glue sticks, etc. we have before heading out. Still not my favorite things to do because it fits into the "shopping" category, but I try to make it a "quality time" activity anyway.

Edukit? And your kid works there? lol What else will people come up with? :)
