snoozin'

wake up.  WAKE UP.  GET UP.  GET UP!!

That's how my husband was sultrily awakened by his sultry wife this morning.

Magnum and I get up at the same time each day, so we share the same alarm on the same clock.  I'm in charge of the alarm.  There was a short window of time during our 22+ years together when he was in charge of the alarm, but that resulted in too many mornings like this morning, so I got the job.

Waking up with an alarm is usually not a problem.  I think my internal clock usurped the alarm clock and pulled a coup today by getting me to continually hit the snooze button without even realizing that I was continually hitting the snooze button.

It's safe to say that sleep quality was not the best last week.  We'd go to bed later than usual and breathe smoke all night because it was too hot to imagine leaving the windows closed at night while it was so hot during the day.  And when things went all Armageddon, we tried to look like we were sleeping for a few hours, but I don't think we really were.

We're lucky, though.  I have a few friends who are parents of little kids, and they didn't even bother to go to bed much.  At least we have older kids - one of whom is an adult on paper and is also a night owl.  He was up listening to the scanners while we pretended to sleep.

Now that things have calmed down considerably, real sleep is returning.  And returning and returning and returning until it's been a good hour and more cycle of alarm-snooze-alarm-snooze-alarm-snooze...

I remember a strange dream I was having probably somewhere during that time.  I was graduating from high school except I was the same age I am now.  My fellow graduates and I were at some bar in my hometown waiting for our commencement ceremony to begin.

Things were as they would be now - us not having seen each other for many years and just sitting around the bar catching up with one another, all while wearing caps and gowns and waiting to receive our diplomas.

Do dreams have meanings?  Or are they just the brain flushing itself?  What was I graduating from?  Where were our diplomas?

Maybe I'll graduate tonight, on time.

I hated school SO MUCH that it used to be a constant nightmare. Now, I'm always being pursued by 'abnormal' animals that need saved, then eat me alive. So, what's that telling ME?

We are a two alarm couple. Our schedules are too different to share an alarm clock. And I rarely oversleep, but if I do, it's only because I forgot to turn the alarm ON before going to sleep!

Dreams? Mine are mostly nonsense though there's enough reality to prove that my mind is still hovering over the things that are impacting my life at the time. I dunno. I think the flushing idea has some merit.

You should have studied more in biology.

Ever have the naked-in-public dreams? Those are nonsense and I HATE them!

Oversleeping is my worst fear! Especially on mornings I have to start at 6am. There's not much room for error.
My hubby can wake without an alarm. I've NEVER been like that.
But you guys deserve to snooze a few extra times. I'm just glad you all feel at peace enough to rest.
I can't help you much with the dream. I'm just impressed you remember yours!

Rarely do I set an alarm. But I do like the way my BlackBerry's alarm starts gently, leading to an, um, alarming crescendo.
Also, we have a new bed. With titanium springs, no less (I kid you not). Not cheap -- but worth it so far.
Here's to some well-deserved slumber in the land of burning lumber...

I had a poetry-writing instructor in college who put it this way: Your subconscious mind knows what direction your life is taking before your conscious mind does. And dreams are the thoughts of your subconscious mind.

Alot of people discount dreams altogether. Still others rely on them for every decision. I think both groups are mistaken. Dreams definitely serve a purpose, and they're not to be taken lightly. Yet we still have so much to learn about the subconscious mind that we should be very careful not to jump to conclusions.

I am terrible at waking up in the morning and rely on my wife and the dogs to get me up...

Good to hear that you are able to sleep again - I for one just can't function without decent sleep.

It would be interesting if you did dream the continuation of the cap and gown situation. Is there a reunion in your near future?

Living near or in a fire shakes the nerves to tingling. I think it would be normal for anyone to have trouble sleeping soundly in that situation. Your body can only go so long that way though, so I am happy for you all that you are on the road to normal sleep. Rest.

I am usually up by 0400 but have three alarms as back up (two clock radio, one watch). I have same paranoia of oversleeping and hate when I wake up late - it usually puts me off the entire day.

I usually don't remember most of my dreams, but the ones I have had lately have been totally bizarre. Something about buying a trailer and going back to school. Not sure what those mean.

Internal clock for me, though I set the alarm anyway.

As I think more about it, the alarm is necessary to wake me after I try to get 10 more minutes of sleep; because those 10 minutes are going to make a significant difference in my day. :)

When you figure out the dream, report back.
