what the...

hail?

So I've mentioned that we want to get a new roof.  It's not that ours is greatly damaged, but our shingles are obsolete, and so we are locked in with our current home insurance until we get new shingles.  I've had a couple roofers look at it, and there is some damage here and there, but it's borderline as to whether or not insurance will cover it.

Our insurance has been kind of dragging their feet, so nothing's decided one way or the other.  Yesterday evening, some storms rolled in, so we were all about generating some hail.

Despite Wolfgang's... uh... "moves", our efforts were a bit of a fail, with the hail never getting much larger than small garbanzo beans throughout several waves of aggressive storming.

But THEN we turned on the local news!  DANG, I've never seen hail as ridiculous as this.  It wasn't so much the size of the hail, but the amount.  With the help from all of the flooding, the hail piled up like large snow drifts, stranding several motorists a few miles south of us.

This photo is from the local news this morning, several hours after the stormage:

Snow plow crews are trying to clear all of it out as major roads are blocked.

So, I'm not sure what to think of this.  While this major hail missed our neighborhood, it was reported to the north of us too.  Could it be that we really DO have the power to generate hail?

Back to the drawing board.  We really need to fix our aim.

And for those to our north and south... uhm, sorry.

"With great power comes great responsibility."

It seems your hail-making dance is in need of some tweaking! I never thought I'd say such a thing, but I sure hope your roof becomes hail-damaged real soon!

Ack! My hometown is on floodwatch and there has been a lot of snow on the mountain passes here! Crazy days...is the end near? Oh well, maybe we should all take a hint from your son and do a dance :)

I saw all the snowplows headed south last night. I was confused. All we got was heavy rain. That is a LOT of hail.

That is an insane amount of hail!! I would never normally say this, but I am so sorry that it MISSED your home. Perhaps next time, Wolfgang should keep his dance circle a little tighter. There's still hope!

Ever considered letting Wolfgang loose on the roof? Nice dance moves, but I'm with Terri, he needs to work on his aim.

Can you melt that stuff and send it our way? Not really wanting the hail, but dang we need some rain!

Nice moves right there! LOL! If hailstorms appear all of a sudden, it definitely calls for a better roofing job to help it withstand such harsh weather conditions. =) And oh, that photo in the bottom is nasty, I wonder how long will it take to remove that. Maybe a sun dance might help. He he he…

Were you able to get a new roof already? It’s a good thing that you were able to plan. It’s better to be early and ready now, than to regret it later. :)

Yikes! That is a lot of hail. Tsk. If only your insurance company isn’t being difficult, then you could’ve repaired your roof before that ridiculous hail storm. I hope that it didn’t further damage your roof.

Old and weak roofing won’t stand a chance in that strong hailstorm. I mean, this will surely inflict damage to your roofing if it happens to be weak, especially when winter strikes. So it’s best to replace your inefficient roofing with something that will last against hailstorm and can defy freezing. Well-insulated roofs would be ideal for that case. Hope you finally settled an agreement with your insurance provider.

Old and weak roofs must be replaced. Roofs also have a certain lifespan and there will come a time that you’ll have to replace them with a new one. Choose wisely what kind of roof you’ll install this time. I hope by now you already have a new roof.
