Silver Liningness Sunday

Like other parts of the country, we've had some really nice and unseasonably warm weather this week.  I ran in capri tights all week.  CAPRIS!  In the usually frigid early mornings!  Under the Venus - Jupiter conjunction!  Magical.

This was also jury duty week. As inconvenient as it can be, I remember to see it as a privilege. And I do find it interesting. I was almost disappointed when the defendant decided to change her plea to guilty, thus sending us all home. Additionally, jury selection for a major local trial that is estimated to last about 5 months was going on while I was captive. Glad I dodged that one. It's for a suspected child molester, though, so I probably would've been kicked out during questioning for being too biased against.

In entertainment news, we watched a whimsical French movie, "The Girl on the Bridge" (La fille sur le pont).  It was fun and humorous combined with having a couple of absolutely enchanting scenes.

"Welcome"  is another film we recently watched.  In contrast to the playfulness of "The Girl on the Bridge", this one deals with very harsh realities of refugees in France while also presenting the  emotions from a marriage that is ending.  That might sound depressing, but it's also touching and hopeful.  It wouldn't be correct to say that I "enjoyed" it, but I found it to be well done and very moving.  I know a movie is good if it continues to haunt me long after I've seen it, and this one does.

And somehow, we found "The Wraith" which is a terrible movie from the 80's starring Charlie Sheen.  It was so bad, yet SO 80's, we couldn't stop watching!  I don't recommend it, but kind of do, just for the laughs (it's not meant to be a comedy) and nostalgia.

What are you watching?

This weather is insane, isn't it? I LOVE it! I'm wearing shorts today. In MARCH! I wish I believed it was going to last.

We don't go out of our way to watch movies, but Mark switched something up on our cable service, so now we have more channels and therefore, more movies. Friday evening we watched "Salt" with Angelina Jolie. It's a CIA/Russian spy kind of movie. Not my normal speed but it had some pretty fascinating plot twists. I enjoyed it.

Shorts?! And I thought you Minnesotans were such tough winter people!

We don't have cable but n*tflix, streaming only, which doesn't have that many mainstream movies, but lots of foreign films. We did watch "Salt" a few months ago - yes good plot twists that held my attention. I couldn't buy into noodle-armed Angelina Jolie taking out all those tough guys with one punch each though.

Pity the trial didn't last as long as you wanted it to, although i'd be jumping for joy if it were me xD. I would imagine that jury duty is boring and horrible.

Also, yay for horrible 80s' movies! They're so bad an 80s' you can't stop watching. I love the bad claymation effects they used back then. It use to scare me as a child but now I think it's cheesy, yet golden.

I'm watching a recording I made from TCM of a film called, "The Rising of the Moon". This is an anthology of three stories about Ireland, filmed entirely in Ireland, by John Ford (who was of Irish descent). All of the actors are Irish, except the narrator, Tyrone Power (who was of Irish descent as well).

And on Blu-ray, I'm watching "La Jetee". This is a very short French film directed by Chris Marker. And it is, not only one of the best sci-fi films I've ever seen, but one of the best films I've ever seen. What's most remarkable about the film (which I've seen many times before) is how it's made. It is a series of still photographs (like a slideshow), in perfect plot sequence, narrated by an unseen man. There is only one scene in which there is any movement, and only for about two seconds. If you've never seen this film, it may still seem very familiar--because "12 Monkeys" is based on "La Jetee".

Nice weather compared to last year at this time.
Glad you didn't have to do the trial. I've sat on one of those child molestation trials and, believe me, it was not pretty/fun.

I've seen The Wraith. Definitely not one of Charlie's shining moments. I've got The Next Three Days in my Netflix queue, but just haven't found the time or motivation to watch it.

Cool films. When you post films I look them up on Netflix to add to my queue.
