Silver Liningness Sunday

Here in the U.S., it's Memorial Day weekend - certainly a time of thankfulness - and the unofficial start of summer. Still, let's not forget what the holiday is really about (unlike our President... harumph!)

OKAY, I habitually don't get political here, and I'm not about to start today, on Silver Liningness Sunday! After all, it was another darned good week.

In fact, just today, we took in some local festivity at the Territory Days street festival. The weather was PERFECT. Too perfect, actually... the place was packed with people! Too packed. We pretty much just flowed with the mass of humanity down the street and then flowed back up. But it was a good enough romp. Lots of muscle shirts and body art to be seen after the long cold winter. Plenty of cleavage too, if you're into that sort of thing.

I just decided it was time for another round of "Find the Cat":

School is winding down. Their last day is next Wednesday. Yes, they get Monday off and then have to go back for two more days. I don't make the schedule, I just do what I'm told.

Oh, and speaking of summer, I took China the dog in for her "bikini season" grooming. That long black fur does not make for a happy dog in summer. She looks very sleek now - an all over shave. Curiously, the groomer seemed to have backed off a little around the... uh.. privates area. She kinda looks like she's got scrotum now (scrota?). Just sayin'.

People-watching is always the best part of any festival. Festivals bring out all kinds!

The cat must be sucking up the heat of those two laptops! (Too easy, this one!)

Happy almost-end-of-the-school-year! I love when school is out. My kids are just so much happier!

I hope poor China doesn't end up with some sort of gender identity crisis due to her new hair-do!

Having today off school, and then having to return for two days reminds me of this:

When I was a kid, there was a German immigrant, Mr. Vogel, who lived (with his American wife) across the street. He was a wonderful man--everybody knew him, all of us kids loved him, we even even had him and his wife over to the house for Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner.

Mr. Vogel was born in 1900(January 1, if I'm not mistaken)--so every year was his age (he died in 1984, at age 84--I still miss him, very much). And he had plenty of stories to tell, as you can imagine!

When he was a kid, he really did have to walk several miles to school. And he told me once about the Kaiser's Birthday. He and all the other children had that day off, technically. But first they had to walk all the way to school (in the snow, if I remember correctly), and sing songs honoring the Kaiser! When Mr. Vogel told me of this, he sang one of the songs (translated into English)--and he could remember it, all of it! After singing the songs, the students could go home--no classwork, no homework. So he had to walk all the way back home after singing a few songs for the Kaiser's Birthday!

Thanks for that story, Scott! Mr. Vogel sounds wonderful.

I think I'll have my kids walk to school today while singing and then walk back.

Ah, the beginning of summer. School's out, kids are under foot, vacations to plan. Reminds us how quickly time passes. Enjoy the time you have before the summer pandamonium begins.

Territory Days sounds great. I love the local town street festivals, even with the crowds. Lots of local flair, plenty of food (bad for you), bands, music, parades, car shows, people wearing too little attire or too much hardware.

I see that you have the latest in cat-powered laptops. I hope that China is not too tramatized by her new doo. She'll be the talk of the dog park...
