Silver Liningness Sunday

Greetings and Happy New Year! Welcome to the first silver liningness post of 2010. Let's reflect, shall we?

Firstly, we greeted the new year with our second annual Midnight Mile. It was chillier out this year than last - invigorating! Despite the temperatures, there were more people outside than I remember from last year. More people out watching fireworks, shooting fireworks, and just taking part in general revelry and noisemaking.

At one point in our run, someone gave a shout out from their porch, "Hey, Happy New Year runners!" I'm not sure if it was a greeting or a description, but it was shouted with sincere merriment and was well received.

Oh, and recall last week when I mentioned the plan for a "no electonics" day? Welp, we did it! Friday. Dja miss me??

It was nice. No computers, no TV, no video games. Surprisingly, there was no whining either. In fact, everyone seemed to get into it, wanting to take it further. Wanting to go "no electricity day!" even. I reminded them that, at that point we'd already used the stove, oven, microwave, hot water heater, furnace, etc... so we went back to just "no electronics" with a plan to get truly feral next time!

One of the things we did on NE day was go hiking. I took this pic with the menfolk up against a cliff face a little before sunset. It made me think of a firing squad setup... *ahem*... can't imagine why.

I kicked off another class this week. It felt good to be back in the classroom after taking a month off. I realized that I'm right where I wanted to be job-wise this time last year when setting my goals for 2009. Time for some new job goals now, I suppose.

And I am so very mucho thankful for my blog friends! Such a smart, fun, witty, varied, helpful, supportive bunch you are!

I was just reading another blog of someone who said she needed to change her New Year's Eve tradition of being home watching Dick Clark.
We had company Thursday, but they all left before nignight, so we did the same thing...watch the ball drop.
We may not do a Midnight Run (although I'd love to), but I'm now inspired to come up with something different next year.

Dick Clark...Good gosh, the man looked like Robin Williams in Old Dogs after tanning. It doesn't work! Dude! Age gracefully like the rest of the human race!

Anyhow, Happy New Year, Abby! Not sure I would be one to run in this kind of weather, but then again, I didn't think I'd be jumping into a freezing lake either...

After three straight days without power, we still love our electronics around here. Running in those conditions at that time sounds fun...but cold!

Your Silver Liningness reminds me that I totally forgot about writing my first Life is Good-ness for the year! Friday just didn't seem like a Friday. Oh well. I make no promises to be consistent, and I'm sure it won't be the only time I miss writing "the usual" Friday post.

Love the fact that you got the family to do the midnight mile again on New Year's Eve! What a great tradition.

And while I admire your family's ability to shut down the electronics and communicate with one another on a real and personal level, we won't be jumping on that bandwagon soon. Mine have a ways to go in simply being able to tolerate each other before we can go to such extremes.

Looking forward to another year of your wit and insight!

Hey Abby I don't know if I'm brave enough to try no electronics for 2 hours with 7 kids. Maybe in the summer when they can go outside lol. It's a great idea though. Gosh I grew up with NO electronics, no tv, no video games and no computers. We read books, rode bikes and played board games.
Kind of like what we do when we go camping lol.
