a day at the track

He was my track coach. Well, not really MY track coach. He was A track coach. He was the distance coach and I was a sprinter.

Bottom line is, he wasn't supposed to ask me out on a date.

It took me quite by surprise, over there just coming out of a turn in the track. I don't remember how it was that we happened to have a private moment in the middle of track practice, but that's where we were.

I stood rather dumbfounded for a moment, then said something like, "Uhm... I don't think my parents would let me", which hopefully was true. I was 16 years old. He was probably a good 10 years older. Sheesh. Dude!

Truth is, I never even mentioned it to my parents. Didn't really see a reason to. I never really mentioned it to anyone because it just seemed so weird.

Recently, there seems to be a rash of stories in the local news about school teachers having "inappropriate relationships" with students. They reminded me of coach Frank. I wondered about other stories out there that don't make it to the news.

Sheesh.

Dude.

Good thing you were a smart girl and didn't fall into that trap. Every time I hear the Police sing "Don't Stand So Close to Me" I think of the movie "Teachers." Do you remember that? Helen Hunt played a high school girl who got in trouble with the gym teacher. So sad that in the years following that movie, the scenario became all too real for so many kids.

That would be really weird.

For a young, bright kid, you had an excellent response. Wrong in so many ways.

Eeeewwwwwww!

Man, you had run-ins with all kind of creeps - the coach, the bathrobe guy...

Maybe you needed to cut back on the Love*s Baby Soft?

We just had a few teachers getting fired in the chicagoland area for *dating* students.

Haven't these people ever heard about match.com, etc etc???

All my coaches ever said to me was, "HEY RED!"

I'm not gonna pretend that I don't feel a little slighted!

Eeew... well that's officially weird. Never ceases to amaze me (in a bad way) just how much of this stuff goes on...

I remember waaay back when in HS, there was this guy who was a substitute teacher. He was a jock type, played second string pro football (seriously). He enjoyed teaching during the off season. He was close friends with one of the teachers at the school.

He asked one of the students out on a date our senior year. Okay, she was 17 but still, it was weird. She, I guess, said no, but then the teacher that was friends with him convinced her to go out with him.

A year later they were married!

Every once in a while I think about it and it still creeps me out. I guess it turned out fine for her, but I dunno, there is something very skeevey about two teachers doing that.

I agree. I'm glad you were smart enough to stay out of that kind of thing.

I had a band director that ended up "meetin' up" with a peer of mine in high school. Well, we had just gotten OUT of high school, but still...

Yuck.

All wrong.

However as a 16 year old guy, I think i would have found this to be Awesome!

Well, assuming my coachs were not men.

Of couse, as i didn't date in high school, I would have thought any girl asking me out was AWESOME!
